She grew up never understanding what was going on around her, but as she grew older she understood the bad things that were happening around her. Scout grew up in a very racist town, surrounded by racists every day she had to know what was right and what was wrong. “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life”(Lee 330).
In the historical fiction novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, the main character, Cassie Logan, a 9-year-old African-American girl who lived in southern Mississippi in the early 1930s when racism was the norm, narrates her perspective on the world around her. The setting of the story, the Logan Land, is important to the Logan family because it is their source of income, the legacy of the land holds an important place in their family history, and they are lucky enough even to own land. In the beginning of the book, Cassie was naive and did not understand how valuable the land was to her family. However, after Big Ma teaches her about the legacy of the land and why it is so important to their family, Cassie finally understands
Throughout the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, the author Mildred Taylor, uses Cassie Logan. Cassie proves her courage by facing her rival Lillian Jean and is willing to help despite his actions to her family. Cassies actions proved she was sassy and outspoken. She loved her family and was willing to risk her life. Do you care about your brother or sister so much that you would take a whipping for them?
In the historical fiction novel, “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,” written by Mildred D. Taylor, Stacey, a young boy of color, faces an internal conflict regarding whether Jeremy or T.J. would be the best choice of a friend for him. Throughout the narrative, Stacey presents that he understands that both Jeremy and himself would be safer if they stayed away from each other and that a friendship with T.J. would be completely accepted in that era. However, Jeremy would be the better choice for a friend for Stacey because he shows real respect for the entirety of the Logan family, he is honest when it comes to realizing his misconduct, and he proves to be much different than his racist family. The novel Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is a heart wrenching story about an African American family going through very difficult times. Through many twists and turns racism, the Logan children learn what it's like in the cruel world outside their protected farmland. By sticking together as a family, Taylor shows how important a strong family relationship is. Had they not stuck together during these times they may not have made it through. In the end Mildred shows how when everyone works together, obstacles could be overcome.
The theme of Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" is enhanced by his use of foreshadowing throughout the story. The story follows a man named Eckles on his journey to the past on a hunt for a real dinosaur. As the events in the past unfold, Eckles ultimately alters the future forever by taking a small step off the Path. The path is there to make sure the time travelers do not affect the future. Unfortunately, Eckles learns the true consequences of his actions when he returns to a changed future.
This is a meaningful and sad story of a black family living in Mississippi during the 1930’s, being treated unfairly. In this book Mildred D. Taylor shows what it was like to be black during the 1930’s from her own family’s experiences. Cassie Logan is not a normal 9 year old girl. She is very confident in herself which leads to trouble because she will do bad things with her confidence. She is not afraid to stand up for something that is wrong, but some people who don’t agree with her threaten her and her family during this book.
Thomas Aquinas once said, “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.” In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Stacey should choose T.J as his friend. T.J would make the better friend because it is socially acceptable, he is able to give important information and finally because Jeremy's family has the power to falsely accuse Stacey of a crime. T.J is a much better choice for a friend because it is socially acceptable by the community. It is Christmas and Jeremy has just come to visit and papa is talking to Stacey about Jeremy and T.J.
The climax of this story is a rape trial that involves a Negro, Tom Robinson, and a white woman, Mayella Ewell. In the court’s eyes’ her power is clear, but is she that powerful? Because of her vulnerability as a woman and a very low-class status, she’s powerless, but her privilege as a white person in a racist society is very powerful. Mayella is powerless because of her gender. In the trial, it’s revealed that Mayella is physically, verbally, and sexually abused by her father.
Roots of Racism ZZ Packer’s “Brownies” takes place at Camp Crescendo, a summer camp for fourth grade students near Atlanta, GA. The author is effective in depicting prejudice and racism through Laurel who is objective, open minded, empathetic and less opinionated; the plot of the story may become increasingly hostile and biased if told from Arnetta’s point of view. Laurel, the narrator is objective and open minded in this racially charged environment at the camp. When Arnetta says she heard a girl from Troop 909 call Daphne a “nigger” Laurel is the only one who considers the fact that Arnetta may not have heard the girl correctly. fShe tries to questions this possibility but Arnetta just brushed her off.

Ray Bradbury used figurative language to describe the Tyrannosaurus Rex in “A Sound of Thunder. ’’ Ray Bradbury compared the legs to pistons, this means that the Tyrannosaurus Rex has strong legs. He compared it’s eyes to ostrich eggs, this means that the dinosaur has big eyes. He also compared muscles to thick ropes, this means that the dino has big thighs.
“He heard Travis breathe loud in the room; he heard Travis shift his rifle, click the safety catch, and raise the weapon. There was a sound of thunder.” (Bradbury 44) This ends the short story “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury. “A Sound of Thunder” takes place somewhere in America during the year 2055, a group of hunters then travel back to the prehistoric dinosaur age.
Volunteering in Belize, Central America I went to hospitals, prisons, and foster homes; I was shocked to see people living in very humble, and often debilitating conditions with very limited access to healthcare. What I found more surprising though, was that upon returning, I now saw the same problems affecting my community in Roxbury. I was born and raised in a low-income single parent household in Roxbury, where quality education, advancement opportunities, and access to basic amenities such as healthcare were not the norm – but it took my experiences in Belize to realize the problems in my own community, and the responsibility I have to address them. Over many years I have heard the gunshots that have taken the lives of young people that shared both my area code and my complexion.
