In the short story “Lysandra’s Poem”, by Budge Wilson, Lysandra is justified in taking revenge on Elaine. This is because Elaine was never a good friend to begin with. Elaine mentions that Lysandra was always made fun of as a child, being given the nickname “Pigeon-Toed Cochrane”. Elaine had never stood up for Lysandra, not even once. If they truly were best friends, Elaine would have tried to stand up for Lysandra.
A variety of issues are examined in Dawe’s poetry, most of which, aren’t uniquely Australian. In ‘The Wholly Innocent’, the poet utilises the narrator being an unborn baby to express their opinion on abortion. The emotive language; “defenceless as a lamb” and comparisons of abortion to “genocide”, all turn this poem into a type of activism, for pro-life; a concept that is certainly not uniquely Australian; as abortion is only legal (on request) in 4 states and territories. These issues aren’t always directly referenced in Dawe’s poetry, much like in ‘The Family Man’, which chooses to explore suicide and it’s effect. The man who killed himself had no name - he was just a statistic, that had “all qualifications blown away with a trigger’s touch”.
Story arc is driven by conflict, this literary analysis is all about the explosion of conflict and other literary elements rampant in “I’ll Eat What He’s Wearing”. This short story is part of a much bigger book called “Me Talk Pretty One Day”. In this short story by David Sedaris, his dad, Lou Sedaris, is the main focus. The reason he is the protagonist is because he loves to hide food and wait until it’s spoiled and then eat it. He also buys the almost spoiled foods when he goes to the store, which is fine if it gets cooked immediately, however his dad would take it home and either hide it or freeze it.
Imagery and tone plays a huge role for the author in this poem. It’s in every stanza and line in this poem. The tone is very passionate, joyful and tranquil.
The first thing I notice about the poem is that it’s imagery is very to the point. The first half of the poem does not mince words at all. the poem is not overly descriptive each sentence tells the reader what is important to know and lets the reader fill in the gaps and make the keeps the poem from being too long. It gives the reader all the necessary details needed to get the general image of the scene. Leaps are much more prominent in the first half of the poem as it was the introduction.
This poem uses alliteration, imagery, figurative language, assonance, rhyme and rhythm to capture you all the way to the
Explication of ' "Hard Rock Returns to Prison” In the society, people focus much on heroes to see whether they will fall or remain as heroes. The poem ‘Hard Rock Returns to Prison...’ is a narrative tale of life in prison. ‘Hard Rock’ is a hero in the prisons. Every member of the prison are out to see how he has lost his lobotomy.
Regardless of this, the poem is famous for its unique rhythm and meter of poem. The poem flows very smoothly but does not have a specific poetic foot. Consonances were used to help the rhyme scheme sound more pleasing to readers. The poets diction was exclusive and out of the ordinary.
Repeating words or phrases sticks with you making it that much easier to understand what the author is trying to portray. I cannot relate to Brown’s poem because first I do not drink soda and nor have i made a comparison of different types of sodas to different people. A question I would ask Brown would be to clarify the difference of the fresh pepsi to the flat pepsi. It is a little confusing and if she thoroughly explained it, it would make more sense. The writing was fine it was not something that really lured you in like her other poem, for example, “For Our Grandmothers”.
In many of your poems I admire you incorporating your culture and expression of pride. It makes your writings unique and different from typical works. You allow your audience to be drawn into a new environment where they can learn about your culture and struggles, which I enjoy. Specifically in your poem Dear, Betty Brown you show a sense of pride in your culture by speaking about your last name. You discuss how many people have a hard time pronouncing your last name and make suggestion that you should either change or find something else to call you by.
the theme being created for me is one of calm and at the same time . The writers tone sort of creates and builds the same mood within the reader we can say this from the use of certain adjectives within the poem its self “calm”, “sweet”, “tranquil”, “gleams” all of which either have an effect of peace or ease in a way. If I had to be in the poets shoes at the time I would have enjoyed the sea and sounds and the calmness it brings. With that being said it brings me to the second part of the question identifying poetic devices and stylistic elements.
This poem doesn 't rhyme; however, it is pleasing to the senses. One literary element it uses is onomatopoeia; this allows the reader to “hear” the sounds in the poem to tell a story. The sounds of the plum in this poem allows the reader to experience the eating of a plum in his mind while he reads it. Words such as “pout and push...savory murmur...pierced, bitten” are
When the author rhymes the story to give the poetic flow, readers are able to see what the author is trying to show. The rhyming may not be literal, but that way, readers can imagine what the poem trys to tell. In the last section, the goal is finally achieved. We can tell that the characters had to push themselves to reach this goal because it says “Hoping an inch of Good is worth a pound of
The poem Hello Day worldwide by Kobina Eyi Acquah discusses the theme of disapproval towards the materialistic world, and furthermore the people’s attitudes that has to be dealt with. From the title of the poem, it can be seen that the poet wants a more open world, where communities are more open and materialism is diminished. With the use of strong literary techniques Acquah expresses his feelings towards the societies, and also explores the aspect of greeting in two different societies. In addition, Acquah has also used the poems structure to his full advantage, and discussed these different perspectives. The poem starts off with an unpleasant theme of deterioration of human and society connection and finally ends with his own solutions to the materialistic world.
The literary elements in this poem add to the effect the poem has on the reader, which can be different for everyone, but it makes the reader reflect on their own life and how kindness has changed
