In 1808, the United States banned the importation of slaves. In 1853, the US Customs and Border Patrol Agency was established In 1855, an immigration landing depot opened at Castle Garden. Before it's close in 1890, 34 million people entered the United States through Castle Garden.
1) Isaac Hourwich’s purpose in writing this book is to oppose the claims of the Immigration Commission as there are also many stereotypes of Immigrants created by Native born Americans and also challenge the findings of the Immigration Commission. Hourwich uses his economic aspects to explain that Immigrants do not cause the labor market to decline, decreases wages, and increase unemployment in the United States. Most of the native-born Americans fear that as the rate of Immigration increases, it might hurt the American wage-earners. Therefore, there is an assumption that most American workers made was that “undesirable” Immigrants should be out of the country and keep the American workers busy. (82)
The Alien act and Sedition Act were two major laws passed by the Federalist Congress in 1798. Both of them caused major social and rights conflicts within the colonies by jailing people who protested the government, deporting innocent immigrants and having no freedom of the press. The Alien act of 1798 allowed immigrants living in the US to be arrested or deported without trial if they were assumed to be dangerous, or in other words, pro french. It also affected the immigrants right to vote. Previously, Individuals were required to live in the US for at least five years before voting, now they had to live in the US for at least 14 years.
As can be seen in documents A-H, from 1880 to 1925, immigration went from being the staple of the American culture to the common enemy of “native” Americans. In 1880 and before, immigrants were welcome to the United States with open arms, which is shown in document A with all of the foreigners flooding into the wide open gate of America. The purpose of document A was to advertise the acceptance of immigrants into the United States and all of the great things they would find when they arrived here. Document B displays that even until 1888, immigrants were viewed by the established Americans as a “double advantage”: helpful to the economy when needed and conveniently out of the way when unnecessary.

From 1825 until 1850, America went through a memorable period in its history. Before this time, this new nation established itself as a persevering and powerful country as it proved in the war of 1812. From 1825 - 1850, The United States again demonstrated its power and perseverance by expanded into the West to control and govern the country with a spirit of courage. This made the country bigger and stronger through its most difficult and trying times during the process of expanding and provided for the country's future success. This was later called, the Manifest Destiny.
Senator Henry Cabot Lodge assured Congress that “the immigrants who would be shut out… are those who bring the least money to the country and come most quickly upon private charity for support” (Doc. F). Influenced by racial prejudice, the government also restricted immigration by ethnicity. In response to growing anti-Chinese sentiment, the government decided that “the coming of Chinese laborers to this country endangers the good order”; in accordance with the Chinese Exclusion Act, the government decided that “it shall not be lawful for any Chinese laborer to come… to remain within the United States” (Doc. The Naturalization ACT of 1790 prohibited all the non-white race residents from becoming citizens of the United States; once they complete 5 years of residency then they can apply to become a citizen and enjoy the benefits that come with their citizenship. Indians and Asians came peacefully and opposed any wars against the Americans. Native Americans and Mexicans were all forced to evacuate from their land. When they refused, the Americans would then kill those who would not comply with their orders.

In the early 19th century, millions of immigrants from Europe had traveled to the United States to escape difficulties faced in their native lands such as poverty and religious persecution. Italian, German, Irish, and many other eastern European immigrants sought the prosperous and wealthy lifestyle advertised in the land of opportunity, the United States. However, after settling down they often faced the difficulties they had fled from as well as sentiments of prejudice and mistrust from the American people. In fact, in 1882 the campaign to restrict immigration created the federal Chinese Exclusion Act, which stopped the Chinese from migrating for 10 years. This prevented the Chinese from achieving the American Dream for that time period. Also, the government placed a tax on immigrant mining, charging them $500 a month, in this time (Maranzani). Women also had a difficult time during the Gold Rush.
