In January 1891, Henry Cabot Lodge published an article called ‘The Restriction of Immigration’ included within the North American Review. In this article, he voices his clear dislike towards immigrants and the impact that they had on America, believing that the immigrants only had a negative effect on them due to ideas at this time that they were inferior to the natives. During this era, immigrants from places such as Russia, France, and Italy were moving east toward the United States. Many of these migrants took up jobs the natives did not want to do such as coal mining, however, some Americans, especially the Immigration Restriction League ascribed societies problems to immigration and linked them to crime, poverty, low standards of living
