The Rich Brother Analysis The Rich Brother by Tobias Wolf, a story of two brothers who in all their own ways are extremely different. The story consists of a small perspective but large underlying emotions of two brothers, Pete and Donald. Pete is portrayed as the successful older brother, who makes good money, has a stable home with his wife and two daughters. Pete is described as “ stout and hearty” whilst his brother Donald is “ bony and obsessed with his fate”. Donald is the younger one, and is illustrated to be single, oblivious and always out of a job or owing Pete money. Throughout the story, we can see that Pete seems to constantly be picking up the slack that his brother always drops. The way the author paints the image that Donald just let the soda sit there, running down his hands, until Pete yelled at him to wipe it up with his shirt, made it clear to the reader that, at times, Donald seems thoughtless. As if he was waiting for the soda to clean itself. To continue, whilst heading home, the brothers seem to get into multiple disputes about their childhood and the things that resided between them when they were younger. It would appear that Donald has many grudges against Pete, while Pete finds Donald immature and irresponsible. A statement that stuck out in paragraph five is, “Pete prospered and Donald did not prosper.” Which may seem like a very simple statement yet, the way it was added in after a small description of the two brothers, gave a sense of summarizing their character. While reading on, the brothers had to stop to get food at a Dennys and while finishing up their meal they met a stranger that asked for a ride and without hesitation Donald insisted that they would take him where he needed to
