Many children today struggle because they are quickly losing interest in school. Thankfully, in "The Secret to Raising Smart Kids," Dr. Carol Dweck has found the answer. Children merely need to change their mindset. Dweck commonly uses empirical, anecdotal, and statistical evidence to support her claim that children need to be taught and encouraged to have a growth mindset to succeed.
Dr. Dweck makes several observations to support her claim. In one class, she observed that students "congratulated for intelligence" looked for an easy way to get a grade while those "applauded for their process" tackled more problems (Dweck 22). By this observation, Dweck proves that with different encouragement, children are more likely to succeed with a growth mindset. Dweck shares many experiences with the reader to illustrate her evidence. There are several instances in which Dweck uses her encounters to prove her claim. For example, some children said, "I never did have a good rememory", causing their confidence and problem-solving skills to diminish (Dweck 8).In contrast, the growth mindset group said, "I was hoping this would be informative!"(Dweck 9). As a result, the growth mindset children achieved a higher score. Through sharing experiences with her studies, Dweck proves that children with a growth mindset are more likely to succeed by comparing children's thoughts and the results of their test scores. To add, Dweck reads a letter in her TED Talk, “The Power of Believing that You can Improve", that she got from a listener who said, ”I have wasted my life” because he had not known about the growth mindset (Dweck 8:24). Suddenly, the listener's relationships and grades went up drastically after a simple change in mindset.
