Gary Webb was an investigative reporter from California. Webb is famous for his series called “Dark Alliance,” which was published in 1996 in the San Jose Mercury News where he worked. This series was highly controversial. In this series of articles, Webb suggested that the Central Intelligence Agency knew about and protected Nicaraguan cocaine traffickers and distributers, which allowed the outbreak of crack cocaine in the African-American community of Los Angeles in the 1980’s. “Dark Alliance” also suggested that law enforcement agencies neglected to prosecute known drug smuggler and distributors. The series started with one main article, then continued with shorter articles for about three months. The House Committee investigated drug traffickers association with the CIA. This report also concluded that there was no sufficient evidence to back Webb’s allegations.
All of the reports were all very critical of the CIA’s and law enforcement agency’s actions, but none had valid evidence to back Webb’s accusations. Then in 1998, a different report by the CIA General Inspector revealed that the CIA had hidden the fact that the agency had a business relationship with Nicaraguan drug distributers.
