There are many actions that we carry out throughout our lives that bring harm to our environment. In order to preserve our environment, we must take the necessary steps to protect our home from anything that harms it. If we do not attempt to conserve our environment, it will result in disastrous affects that will effect us dearly. In the book The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert, Kolbert explains how humans beings have changed our planet drastically in a way no other species has before. The book demonstrates that the Earth is in the midst of a modern sixth extinction by chronicling previous mass extinction events, and comparing them to extinctions during our present time. Though Kolbert explains the reasons of why many areas of life have been altered, the topic that is most troubling is the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The acidity of the ocean will heat it up which will cause warmer weather. Most plants and animals live in areas with very specific climate conditions, such as temperature and rainfall patterns, that enable them to thrive. Any change in the climate of an area can affect the plants and animals living there, as well as the makeup of the entire ecosystem. As Earth gets warmer, plants and animals that need to live in cold places, might not have a suitable place to live. If the Earth keeps getting warmer, many organisms could face mass extinction if nothing is done to control the levels of carbon dioxide. Climate changes caused by ocean acidification will not only affect animals and plants, but will have an impact on our surroundings. Global climate change threatens coastlines and the buildings and cities located along them. Many people around the world live in low–lying areas near the coast that could be flooded as the sea level rises. If something is not done to prevent excess carbon dioxide, it will leave lasting
