The novel The Slopes of War by N.A Perez forecasts the gruesome story if the Union Vs. Confederate war. At the time, President Abraham Lincoln was running the country and wanted to abolish slavery. The bonds between families were tested throughout the duration of the war. As the book progresses one of the main characters, Bekah Summerhill finds herself and develops into this new young woman. Along her character development journey, she also learns that you can not have the best of both worlds. The Summerhill family has been living their rural life in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This is mostly because of the new found love interest in her cousin Custis. Yes, this is an incest relationship. Part of my feels that she fell for her cousin cause Bekah didn’t really know who she was, she hasn’t really found herself due to that fact that she isn't very mature at the beginning of the book. While Bekah’s brother Buck is fighting for the Union Custis, the “love of her life” is fighting in the Confederate army. Their story is quite interesting because it is very much like a Romeo and Juliet story, in short they have a forbidden love situation. The quote “Maybe I shouldn’t feel for you the way I do…us being cousins and all… But I do, and it’s the best part of being in love.” {p.82} Really hit Bekah in the novel and the love for her cousin just grew after that. This quote also symbolized the coming of age and maturity development in her life, also Bekah has shown a lot more responsibility throughout her actions with Captain White, a captain came into the Summerhill's lives as an injured soldier and Bekah and her mother gladly took him in and are currently caring for him. “For the first time, she noticed the stiff dark stains all over her dress.” “If only we had been able to stop the bleeding.” {p.137} N.A Perez, the author of the novel most likely added this expert because it describes how different Bekah is starting to become. Her love Custis dies and the way Bekah is coping and dealing with his is very heartfelt and mature. The quote “She was ready when he came wearing Adam Waite’s torn and bloodstained jacket and his trousers, held with a belt.”{178} Really is a significant improvement from her childish behavior in the beginning of the book. Bekah took the risk and put on that ratty uniform just to see her love once again. “But I know it’s a day that I’ll never forget.” {p.186} this quote is one of the last pieces of dialogue from Bekah in the whole novel. As simple as it might sound I actually do think it holds a lot of meaning. All of her character forming basically came us because of the emotional woes that the war gave her. Everything that had to do with her love crust is formed her and all the conflicts that came along that were from the kin against kin situation between the family. When she says this quote it is also the end of the war and her 16th birthday the war has shaped and formed her go the new 16 years old she is today. This also goes for the rest of her family and many people that were around at the time. This war was something America would never
