Throughout the story “In the silence” by Peggy S. Curry the protagonist; Jimmy is on a rollercoaster of emotions. At the beginning of the story, Jimmy is depressed and homesick because of his interactions with Angus Duncan. Although as he would finger is brooch he would remember home, this made him happier. When Angus sent Jimmy into “the silence” he was scared, scared of all the dangers around him. After a few nights “in the silence” he had already lost two of his sheep, one was killed when trampled by a horse, and another was dropped and killed by a sheep, he was worried about what Angus’ reaction would be along with the sheep’s safety in jeopardy.
In the book Silence by Sarah Roche-Mahdi, the author depicts the life of Silence, the daughter of Cador and Eufemie, who grows up and lives under the disguise of a boy under the rule of King Evan, a stern yet respected leader who prohibits women from inheriting any land or possessions. The portrayal of justice is notable throughout the novel as every character confronts this idea of justice at some point, and Roche-Mahdi clearly expresses that the responsibility to uphold justice often lies within those in positions of power. At the beginning of the novel, King Evan is introduced as the one who upholds justice in the realm by maintaining peace and chivalry (Roche-Mahdi 7). He is responsible for the well-being of his kingdom, and Roche-Mahdi
Silence or Art? Art can be defined as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” (Oxford Dictionary). Art can be found almost anywhere and everywhere at the exact same time. Whether it’s in a scenic setting, in melodic music, or even in the simplest of paintings, art’s been prevalent all throughout history and is even found dating back to around 60,000 years ago. Artists create art for various reasons, whether it’s for entertainment or even as a form of expression.
In Night, one is faced with silence and negligence from the world. While being unwillingly evacuated from his home, Eliezer’s friends and neighbours stayed inside and watched as their former companions marched to their impending death. As Eliezer noted, “from behind their windows, from behind their shutters, our fellow citizens watched as we passed.’ (Eliezer Wiesel, 19) The Hungarian civilians watched in silence too naive and confused to approach the German military and help the Jewish people.
Ellie Wiesel was a Jew who was captured by the German Nazi’s during the Holocaust in 1944. He was only 15 years old when he was sent to the Concentration Camp. Ellie, his mom, his sister, and his dad was sent to the Concentration Camp in Auschwitz. In January 1945 Ellie was transported from Auschwitz to the camp in Buchenwald. He talked about how he remembered walking by the Crematorium and watching them throw babies into the ovens.
Joy Kogawa's Obasan is a representation of the silence Japanese Canadians experience specifically in the past as they have been repressed from telling the stories of the internment camps in Canada due to the government's pressure to not talk about what happened to them, leading to the negative and generational consequences of silence as a trauma response. In addition to showing how Japanese Canadians have covered up traumatic events through silence. Obasan also demonstrates how silence has not solved anything, but has made the traumatic events worse, and that healing can only occur when people begin to speak about them. Silence is shown by the family secret about Namois's mother being absent, as well as Namoi never wanting to tell anyone about her sexual assault from an Old Man Grower, the difference between Namoi’s aunts in how they choose to be vocal or silent in their life. Finally, how Joy Kogawa herself uses Obasan as a way to use language to share her story as a Japanese Canadian.
What a Dictator Wants vs. What a Dictator Does Not Want What silence is to a reigning dictator, corruption is to government officials. When citizens are in fear they tend to be silent and never lash out at their rulers as great or fatal consequences can result. On the other hand, silence can stir up resistance to the power of a dictator ending their rule. In the book, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, the setting takes place in the Dominican Republic where the crude dictator Trujillo rules and installs fear in his people. Trujillo does as he pleases and has many personal "eye witnesses" to back him up if needed.
The Speaking the Unspeakable lecture by Laura Gomez was mostly on the topic of immigration, particularly Hispanic immigrants. A point that was brought up in the lecture was the fact that there is discrimination when it comes to the possession of illegal drugs. To put into context, people of color compared to Whites are more likely to be caught with any amount of drugs and arrested for the possession. They are more likely to be caught because they are already targeted by law enforcement due to the color of their skin and law officials tend to be not as lenient with people of color when they do break a law compared to a White individual. This example of discrimination used by Laura Gomez made me think of an example that was present in the reading
The main character, Melinda has to deal with the feeling of betrayal and loneliness as all the people who she grew up with, shared unforgettable memories with and the people she thought would never leave her side now backstabbing her and making her feel like she isn’t worthy to live. Melinda “responds” to this problem by ignoring everyone and becoming isolated so that no one would approach her and ever hurt her ever again. I would advice Melinda to try and go up to her friends and let them know what really happened. As they say “in the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take”. It’s better for Melinda to at least try and talk to her friends, because they may have been true friends all along there just may have been a misunderstanding.
Silence, multiple times throughout the text Elie Wiesel refers to the silence of the people. When reading this story that stood out to me the most. He is writing from the perspective of a young boy violated by the unimaginable horrors of human nature. In my head I saw a young child, abused, surrounded by a sea of silent people. The original title translated into “And The World Remained Silent” really captured the feeling of the book.(Wiesel,Pg13)

A silent voice by Yoshitoki Ōima, The book starts off with a new girl who went to a new school but when she was introducing herself to the class she wrote down on a notebook saying that she is deaf and hopes to get to know everyone and if people want to talk to her just write on her notebook.
