For this final project, I listened to Emily Tigges and Greg Dobihal’s presentations on their family’s history and musical roots. Greg’s family has Czechoslovakia (father’s side), German (mom’s side), and Dutch (mom’s side) roots. Located in eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, has very distinct genres of music. The most popular, the polka, is a form of Czech folk and dance music that utilizes a wide range of instruments, including accordions, trumpets, clarinets, tuba, and others. He also noted the important and popularity of Czechoslovakian classical music, citing Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” as an example.

This week’s readings highlighted both several different approaches to music biographies and the challenges confronted by the reader to treat them as historical documents. The audience for music biographies consists mainly of fans of that artist and their music and thus focus on the action of the story and less about the historical context or analysis. I have started to attend concert in USA not very long ago because of the difference between the cultures between my country and USA. But, this concert was very important to attend as it was happening in my own university so I decided to go for it.
The intentionality of both parties involved function in conjunction to create an environment which was receiving and open by the audience. It also provides a space for artistic expression for the performers, as “through the dynamic of the work itself (musical form, dance dynamic, trance-dance, rite of healing, festival, ceremony). These concerns have demanded an attention both to the compositional skills and intentions of the performer-creators and to the effects of their work, which of course frequently transcends the reduction to compositional intention.” (Kapferer, B & Hobart, 2006:22). The deliberate efforts made to appreciate and express musical abilities were the prime intentions for both parties, and in this way the intentionality of both audience and performer created artistry and a presence at the One Direction
Music builds bridges across communities through constructing a sense of companionship, trust, and relatedness. The music experience disregards predisposition, labels, and stereotypes to converge on the community. By disregarding personal differences, music sanctions as a connection between the past and the present, bringing all individuals together. As discussed in the Seattle Fandango Project, music empowers individuals, not only on an individual level, but also through the ways in which these individuals pertain to a community. Through the community, musical expression raises awareness about African roots of respective musical genres by generating events that span across generations.
Although this assignment seems, on the surface, to be a fairly simple and straightforward effort, I have struggled somewhat to focus onto one piece of music. Perhaps it is because I am older, have traveled, worked and lived in many different environments and amongst many different people and cultures. The most basic feeling that comes to me, however, is my love for our country, and the sense of belonging and brotherhood from serving in the armed forces.
