Anna Wilson Ms. Keri Hamrick HIS 201 June 6, 2015 Review of 1776 1776 by David McCullough is published by Simon and Schuster. In 1776 David McCullough perfectly illustrates how the American army was always on the edge of defeat during the year of 1776. The story was limited to only one year with little background information; this causes confusion. Those who do not have a good understanding of the American Revolution will have an especially difficult time deciphering what the book is describing.
The main purpose of this chapter is to determine the Founding Fathers’ motives for creating the Constitution by analyzing a secondary source by Woody Holton, and several primary sources. Frist, I will begin with the secondary source, “Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution” by Woody Holton. Mr. Holton’s main purpose was to locate the motivation behind the Constitution in developments in the states (page 90). Mr. Holton addressed several grievances for possible motives of the Founding Fathers’. First, the excessive democracy that acerbated many Americans, the runaway inflation caused by the farmers who were allowed to satisfy their debt to creditors with property and good instead of hard currency, and the Revolutionary War that
Next, Brooks uses the rhetorical device of Logos to appeal to the intelligence of the reader. He says “as late as 2003, Americans were the most patriotic nation, according to the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center”.
“It is the Soldier, not the minister, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
New Nationalism vs. New Freedom In the 1912 election for president there were four candidates, two were Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Both had reforms that they placed as the center of their campaigns. Roosevelt’s reform was New Nationalism and Wilson’s was New Freedom.
In 1791 Thomas Paine wrote a book about America’s demeanor and several centuries later not much has changed. In almost three hundred years buildings have sprung up where forest once thrived, races have come together despite cultural differences, and political lines have rearranged to create the constantly evolving United States of America. The surface of America will never stop changing but, the principles of the American people will always be the same. We as a people will always be accepting of anyone regardless of race and we will always support the right to choose heedless of class. However riots and protestors have begun in an attempt to stop the police officers from treating Americans with such brutality.
The National Anthem is something many Americans hold dear to their hearts. When football players started to kneel instead of stand with the others as a protest, Americans started to become angry. Football players should stand for the national anthem for the soldiers, to help unify America, and to find another way to protest. First of all, football players should stand for our soldiers. Our soldiers have fought for our country and they fight for our flag.
He was able to motivate through the use of rhetorical questions, a strong emotional appeal, and speaks directly to the audience in 1st person to influence their opinions personally. One of the main goals of the speech was to bring a sense of nationalism into the colonists through fear of what would happen if the British had control of America. Henry uses first person to bring a sense of mutual bonding to show that he is one of them and wants to help be a part of a movement which drew the people towards him. He encourages the fight by saying “we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight!”.
What it means to be an American is that you have the freedom to vote freedom of speech. You have the liberty to be what you want in America no one chooses for you. Also have the liberty to work wherever you want not be someone 's slave. Being American means you don 't have to hide your religion, the color of your skin or your sex. You have the ability to speak what you want.

The two passages, “The Smell of Fresh Paint” by Sergeant Tina M. Bella, and “International Reality Consultants, IDT.” by Amy Vaughan, are both told by narrators who are in the center of the events. This being said, I would change one of the stories point of view to try and make it easier to understand. I would say that “International Reality Consultant, IDT.” would be a good story to have a different point of view on because it may be easier to understand the meaning. On the other hand, “The Smell of Fresh Paint” would not be a good passage to have a different point because it is more of a first-hand experience, unlike the other passage.
William Novak presents an argument on how the history of American government has been told upside-down for many years now. Novak depicts a mighty American state, capable of a great deal and responsible for some of the most important narratives in American history. However, there were many people, of whom had great interest in the founding fathers, were irritated by Novak’s argument. The main group of people being referred to here were people from the Tea Party political movement.
On the other hand, Tompkins writes about the idea of perspectives and how they
The opinion piece published by the Los Angeles Times, “Amazon.com Is a 21st Century Deal with the Devil,” by Amy Koss states her central argument that Amazon is destroying jobs, malls, and stores in the outside world. I strongly disagree with the statement that Amazon is destroying jobs and stores because I believe Amazon brings convenience by allowing people to sell things they might not need that others do. According to Koss,” I also think that it is at the convenience of consumers who have a difficult time going outside because of a medical issue or if they’re just lazy because of the fact that they can order something and have it delivered to them in less than a few days with an even cheaper price tag. Online shopping on Amazon allows others to earn jobs as well because they might work from home and work for Amazon or they might deliver items to the consumer. Some people may even start their own online selling business on Amazon.
Point of view can really have an effect on your beliefs, thoughts, and how you view the world. Just like this quote, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee, Pg.39) explains the effect of perspective outstandingly. “...It is a sin to kill a mockingbird.
