Life is strange when everything you know one minute is suddenly different from the next. The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt shows how important it is to find people who support you while showing kindness as you persevere through hardships. Holling starts off thinking everyone hates him, but I think it's just his perspective. The next thing he knows is how everyone is growing up with him. Holling grows as a person with the help of Meryl Lee, Heather, and Mrs. Baker. This is because they didn’t see the other person’s perspective. Growing up is a tough thing we all need to go through. Mr. Hoodhood thinks he is going to pass on the architect business when Holling is old enough, but he does not want to take on that role. What makes Mrs. Baker realize Holling does not want to be like him is when he is having a conversation with her. “‘Would you mind not calling me Mr. Hoodhood? It sounds like you are talking to my father’ Mrs. Baker sat down at Danny’s desk. ‘You’re still angry about opening day,’ she said. ‘I just don’t want to be him already’ (Schmidt 219)”. Which leads Mrs. Baker to bring up how he has “the soul of an architect,” and how he doesn’t have to be like his father to do the same job. Near the end, Holling actually does stand up for once, for Danny. “‘You think that's how you become a man, by chanting a few prayers?’ ‘You think you become a man by getting a job as an architect?’(Schmidt 260)” Which really shows Holling's perseverance and growth throughout this book. In conclusion, Holling grew a lot in the span of one school year.
