Recommended: The impact of parents in a child's education
I read the book called the Wednesday wars by Gary D. Schmidt. The book is about a boy named Holling Hoodhood who is in seventh grade and his teacher, Mrs. Baker. The story takes place mainly in school or at Holling’s home. The first main event is when Holling finds out he is the only one that doesn't leave school early on Wednesdays because of Hebrew school or catechism. Also, when Holling let the rats go, it caused a lot of trouble through the story.
People always question themselves, they are always trying to perfect everything they do. Everyone does it, because everyone wants to be better. They want to achieve their goals in life and be successful. They will also do almost anything to gain perfection. Whether it’s gain in wealth, jobs, friends, relationships, or anything you could imagine.
Yuri Kochiyama is a Japanese-American civil rights activist, and author of “Then Came the War” in which she describes her experience in the detention camps while the war goes on. December 7th, is when Kochiyama life began to change from having the bombing in Pearl Harbor to having her father taken away by the FBI. All fishing men who were close to the coast were arrested and sent into detention camps that were located in Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota. Kochiyama’s father had just gotten out of surgery before he was arrested and from all the movement he’d been doing, he begun to get sick. Close to seeing death actually, until the authorities finally let him be hospitalized.

The book provides a summary of the military history of the war.
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
In the 1950s, Texas was at the forefront of two major, but very different civil rights movements—the African-American movement and the Mexican-American movement. Fighting Their Own Battles by Brian Behnken describes and compares the separate battles for rights of the two movements. People in Texas knew what was happening and newspapers reported about the different events that occurred throughout the 1950s. In hindsight, and with the help of Behnken’s book, one is able to see the subtle influences of both civil rights movements in the Texas newspapers. At the time however, these differences in strategy between the African-American and Mexican-American movements were not so easily understood.
The novel The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt has many overall themes, the story follows a young boy in middle school learning about the nature of life through sad, happy, and devastating events. Holling Hoodhood is the only person in Miss. Baker's class doesn't go to a religious school on Wednesday afternoon, so instead, he has to spend his time with Miss. Baker reading Shakespeare and cleaning the chalkboard erasers. The first theme that is portrayed in The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt is that we can learn from others' mistakes , this means that when others mess up it helps us because we then know what not to do .This was portrayed in The Wednesday Wars when Hollings sister Heather runs away to
Coffman, Edward. The War to End All Wars. New York: Oxford University Press, 1968 “The War to End All Wars: The American Military Experience in World War I” by Edward M. Coffman writes from the point of view of the soldiers who were actually involved in the battles of World War I. Coffman set out to write a history of the American military experience in World War I, it was apparent he had two major goals in writing this book “The War to End All Wars: The American Military Experience in World War I.” He starts by telling us how American was not prepared and appeared to be confused in many aspects of the war.
It is sometimes difficult for individuals to settle the discrepancy between truth and illusion, and consequently they drive others away, by shutting down. Mrs. Ross, in The Wars by Timothy Findley, is seen as brittle while she is attending church, and cannot deal with the cruel reality of the war and therefore segregates herself from the truth by blacking it out. As a result, she loses her eyesight, and never gets to solve the clash between her awareness of reality and the actuality of the world. She hides behind a veil, and her glasses to distance herself from reality. Mrs. Davenport has to wheel her around in Rowena’s chair to keep her awake, so she doesn’t harbour up subconscious feeling within her dreams, which she is unable to deal with.
Lawrence B. Schlack author of ¨Not going to College is a Viable Option” article is persuasive for students entering college. Throughout the essay Mr. Schlack gives many examples to why it is very important for students to know what they want to do before making a lifelong choice. Doing this Lawrence B. Schlack uses ethos, pathos and logos to establish persuasion within the article. Overall the article, “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” is an article persuades readers to stop and think of the choices they’re going to make.
The book The Best War Ever, by Michael C. C. Adams, is about World War II, the events that led up to the war, and the years following the war. Adams starts the book off explaining some myths that people have about the war. The biggest myth associated with the war is that it was the best war ever. Adams then spends the rest of the book talking about why this may or may not be true. In the following chapters, Adams explains the events that led to the war and the events that accorded during World War II.
As I look back on my journey to college, I faced many different problems and disadvantages even before taking my first steps on campus. In Linda Banks-Santilli’s “Guilt is one of the biggest struggles first-generation college students face” many first generation students view being the first one in the family as a major flaw before entering college (Banks-Santilli, 2015, Par. 4 &7). The lack of self-respect makes it difficult for students to achieve success without help or motivation. The students have to change their viewpoint about being the first to go to college in their family as a weakness and make it a strength to help motivate them to be better students.
Author Larry Cublin believes that students in high school should know about this topic “ Why everyone shouldn’t go to college” due to the fact that students don’t know how many years they want to go to college, hot they are going to pay for college, and they realize college is not for them. They way that I see it is that everyone may not want to go to college because they already have a mindset on what they want to do. For instance, most students think they know what they want and what to do but they don’t realize that there are alternatives like taking a vocational program that is only two years which is less time to waste in college and you are able to work quicker after those two years, but the downfall is that you won’t get paid much
Despite an increase of education scores in the past decade, the United States still trenches behind many countries. Scores found in the Programme for International Student Assessment, the most popular cross sectional test, finds that the United State ranks thirty-eight out of seventy-one countries in test performances of english, math and science literary. But within the country itself contains a deeper issue. The term “achievement gap” is used to describe the polarity between the academic performances of minorities, such as Black and Hispanics, to those of Asians and White students; which are found to be much lower than the latter. Besides test scores, this achievement gap is most apparent in grades and drop-out rates as well.
Parents play a big role in their child’s lives because they provide a sense of direction for them. It is natural for a child to look up to his/her mom or dad. If a young adult doesn’t have the help from their parents who have already experienced college then they are already behind the kids who are able to use their parents as a resource. A quote by Nijay Williams in the article says, “My mom stopped school in the ninth grade; my dad stopped in the fourth grade … It makes it harder for me, [and] most of the people I graduated with are not in college, but that’s what I see myself doing; I want to go to college.
