In Mrs. Carolyn Gregoire’s passage, “Why are Millions of People Spending Time Watching Others Play Video Games” the author presented a notion that modern technology, especially the global web and online communities are making emotionally desensitized since they could not fulfill the same needs as real-world communities. In her mind, social networks and online communities are significantly inferior to real life, as she believes they reduce bonding among human. Mrs. Gregoire also believes these technological inventions are “leaving people with more superficial connections than they would have otherwise”, thus human need device free time. Gregoire’s notion is, however, lack depth since it disregards actual benefits of social media and online communities.

With the advancement of social media and the internet, as well as governmental mass surveillance, Julian Assange, creator of Wikileaks describes it critically in his video-interview with RT news: “In thinking about this issue I want to take quite a different position, perhaps, from what you would expect me to have taken… I think that we should understand that the game for privacy is gone. It’s gone. The mass surveillance is here to stay.” When everyone is connected and all of their actions are more transparent for the world to see, would they be more vulnerable to the influence of society but at the same time influencing society more than ever before?
