Academics and Athletics Do Not Mix Well
A high SAT score or scoring the state winning goal are two major ways to get into a great college, but these academics and athletics do not mesh well together. Many students will get the attention of colleges by scoring well on impacting tests like the SAT or ACT or by being very talented at a sport, proving yourself while playing, and getting your name out for colleges to see. In the article “Why Sports and Elite Academics Do Not Mix” the author, Jonathan R. Cole, gives several different examples on why he believes that sports and academics do not mix and persuades his reasons why in detail.

This piece of writing was also persuasive because of the rhetorical elements that Jonathan R. Cole used. The purpose of this article was to inform why Sports do not mix with elite academics well with background information, credibility, logic, and persuasion. The communicator wanted his audience to be young students because he wanted to explain the reasons why academics and athletics do not work well together and prevent students from making a possible mistake when entering into college. The author uses his credibility as a college professor and previous college athlete to persuade the audience to support his claim. The facts and logic within this article contributes to R. Coles logos. An example of the author using logic to make his argument is saying, “Arizona State University gives athletic scholarships to just over 1 percent of a class of first-time Freshman,” which explained that most universities only give a small amount of scholarships to incoming students. The way that good communicator uses emotion to connect with his audience was by irritability and offensiveness that the college examples might make people feel.
