Why we Lie by Yudhijit Bhattacharjee is an intriguing article that investigates “the science behind our deceptive ways.” Yudhijit looks into stories of people who have grown to become what is called a compulsive liar and the science around why they became that way. The use of anecdotes and scientific findings combined makes for an interesting read that relates the information to our real lives today.

This article made me think, not only about myself and the lies I have told but about the possibility that the people around me were deceiving me everyday. Eventually I let my guard down I took in the information and started to try and make small changes in my life to be as honest of a person that I once thought I was. I found myself lying without even considering what I was doing but only about small things like forgetting a book. What I found interesting was that I never got carried away I never crossed the line which made me a compulsive liar. Lying is something that originated not long after human life, something that was almost a built in feature. The line that we formed from being acceptable to becoming compulsive was formed by ourselves to overall make us feel better about the ‘white lies’ we tell. As we get older and our minds start to mature and we feel the pressures of others to live up to a standard so we often lie more often and the line we see in our minds becomes further and further away. In the article it mentioned that lying is at its highest rate between the ages of 13-17 your teenage high school years. This came at no surprise to me because of the increasing pressures felt by teenagers during high school. Trying to balance school with family and extracurricular activities is quite enough without having to put up with
