Preface American literature has its own story of how it has developed over time into one of the greatest ways for a person to express themselves. A reader can find the change easily in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by introducing Oscar as an extremely complex, relatable character. This work also shows the shifting of American literature again after the Second World War. The English language was renewed by the use of other languages such as Spanish and French allowing authors “to reach new regions of human experience and American culture”. In fact, people are encouraged to express themselves through writing because the author’s life is no longer a lowly one. Many universities around the world offer programs to help aspiring authors off their feet by mediating between writers and the publishing community. The growth of these programs has multiplied to 880 programs in 2012 ranging from an associate degree to a PhD. These programs allow the students to develop their writing style through journals, blogs, and websites. The internet has accepted writers of all ages, races, and genders while also expanding the reading population, especially with smart phones. It is easier for me to read an article or eBook while walking to class than packing around an extra physical book. The internet encourages the spread of language throughout the globe, so the audience of an English article can impact people in countries where English is not the first language. Authors even have the option to translate their work into multiple languages not long after publication, this is so cool! The internet reminds us that literature is a breathing, growing, living thing. This medium “changes in the very hands of the writers and speakers”. (Hungerford, pp. 20) Literature is something that is always going to conform to society’s needs while bringing quality work to the people. Literature can be used in so many ways, politically, religiously, personally and more. This allows it to relate to individuals and their agendas, likes and dislikes.
