Summary: The Gay Liberation Movement

One of the more recent liberation ideologies is that of the Gay Liberation movement. Starting in the late 1960s, the Gay Liberation movement addresses the issues that the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community face such as discriminatory laws, homelessness, unemployment, and other problems. By fighting against these injustices, the Gay Liberation ideology hopes to make a safer and fairer society for the members of their community. The LGBT community faces many issues due to their sexuality and or gender. In several states in the United States of America, sodomy laws were created in order to prevent same sex couples from having sexual relations. The first goal is to gain access to previously denied opportunities, and to repeal discriminatory laws. To achieve this goal, members of the gay liberation movement protest against sodomy laws and laws against same sex marriage. For example, in 2014 members of the LGBT community protested the Winter Olympics because it was being held in Russia, a country where it is a crime to be gay. In addition, members of the gay liberation movement advocate for policy changes that would make it easier for members of the LGBT community to gain healthcare, housing, and jobs. However, this is not the only goal of the gay liberation movement. In addition to gaining rights, lesbians and gays also seek to overcome homophobic myths and beliefs about them. Gays and lesbians seek to do away with myths such as: all gays molest children, older gays recruit children to be gay, and that gays must have some form of mental defect. These and other homophobic beliefs are what cause discrimination towards gays and lesbians, and makes it more difficult for many to be open about their sexuality.
