Journal 4 You’re all alone the only person you have in your life is your younger brother because your mom is a drug addict that is never home and your dad left you when you were young, how do you feel? This happens to Ian McDermott and his little brother Sammy. When Sammy was born his father left them and that was when their mother became a drug addict. Ian has to take care of Sammy because their mother isn’t going to watch over him. They live on boxed and canned foods plus whatever they can scavenge out of the trash because they do not have any money. Three important conflicts in this book are between Ian and his gym teacher, between him and his brother, and between him and the guy his mom brings home. The first important conflict is between Ian and his gym teacher Ms. Schmidt. Ian got in a fight with his teacher because his friend Tony was talking to him about a girl. This adds to the fact that Ms. Schmidt and Ian have a past of fighting over the equal treatment between athletes and other students. Ms. Schmidt caught Tony talking to Ian and makes them do push-ups. When the boys got home they came into their mother sitting on the couch with some guy eating the supper that Ian had bought for them to eat earlier in the day. Ian got angry because that was the only food they had in the house and he was eating it. Ian approached the guy: “He’s eating Sammy’s dinner… Sammy needs to eat.” (Harmon 30). When Ian approached him he reached for the plate of food but the guy grabbed his wrist as soon as he touched the plate. He rubbed Ian’s bones together until he let go of the plate. Ian refused to let go until his wrist felt like it was breaking in half. This guy wouldn’t even give up food for a ten year old and his mother wouldn’t suppress the man to get the food for Sammy.
