The Physics behind Sonography Technology
Megan Rabideau
November 25, 2017 Sonography is a type of imaging that uses high frequency Ultrasound Waves to produce images of the body. The Ultrasound Technology can use different frequencies depending on what is needed to record. The higher the frequency, the smaller the length of the wave will be. Higher frequency sound waves are used to produce images of the body that are closer to the outside of the body. Lower frequency sound waves are used for structures of the body that are deeper in caparison. They are still in the high range for frequency but it is less than what is used with areas of the body that are towards the outside. The frequency measurement used in Sonography is usually between …show more content…

A refraction, is a bend in the Ultrasoundwaves. Now, when the sound wave refracts towards the transducer, it does not go in a straight line towards the detector. The reflected angle will be the same as the angle of the incident wave. How the incident wave refracts all relies on what angle it was at when the wave hit the structure. Since the wave won't go in a straight line towards the Transducer, the image will not be clear and could possibly be changed in the process. (Aldrich, 2007) This will be a diffuse reflection. The sound wave will bend and depending on how the angle is when it hits the surface, will determine what the angle is of the sound wave. The Ultrasound systems are programmed that sound goes in a straight line. Since the refraction is not in a straight line, the image will not look as it is supposed to. The image on the Sonogram will not be of high-resolution and the image could have been changed by the Ultrasound system because of this incident. So if a refraction occurs, you will not have an accurate …show more content…

It will take the Ultrasound waves and change them into an electrical signal which we can see during the Ultrasound or on the sonogram. When the soundwave reflects off of the structure in the body, the wave will reflect towards the Transducer. When the Ultrasound wave reflects off of the object, the altitude changes. The greater change in altitude, the clearer the sonogram will be. When the wave hits the structure, and the altitude changes, the wave will reflect back. Which produces the image we see on the Ultrasound. This high-frequency test is used frequently to see the condition of a fetus in the mother's womb. The child will not be harmed since the Ultrasound just uses high-frequency Ultrasound Waves to produce the image. Which will produce a clear Sonogram to evaluate what is happening in the
