With that being said, when most hear about oil spills they usually think of our oceans, probably due to the fact that some serious and damaging oil spills have taken place there. One of the most famous is the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Deepwater horizon was an oil ridge off the Gulf of Mexico, that’s purpose was drilling into the ocean to retrieve the oil. However; in 2010 there was a malfunction on the rig that caused a massive fire, and on April 22 Deepwater Horizon sank into the ocean spilling oil everywhere. This event was even larger than the as Exxon Valdez (1989) oil spill. Not only did the Deepwater Horizon oil spill create extensive damage to the environment that took a while to clean up, but also 11 crew members were killed on the rid. Federal agencies, in other words, sought to protect the environment they already knew how to protect” (Bond, 2013). Which readdresses the point of this paper that even though government are doing what they can to minimize the effects of oil spills, they need to be looking at new laws, regulations, and programs that are going to help them in accomplishing the prevention and /or preparedness plans of oils so that spills like Deepwater Horizon never happen again. At an international level, all nations need to be focused on the prevention and preparedness of oil spills because of two main reason.
