Sunday Greens - Rita Dove In Mr. Maples’ class, we had to do a project on a poem. Me and my group had to describe what was the universal truth about human beings (otherwise known as a theme). The poem that I, Shania, Jaylen, and Gurlyn worked on being “Sunday Greens” by Rita Dove. The poem basically states that there is a woman thinking about living in calm Sunday, feeling luxurious. But in reality, the woman is poor. She is cooking and cleaning while her lazy husband is doing nothing to help her. After that, the woman thinks about her mom listen to jazz. The theme we came up with is that people will not always be able to get the things they want; rather they can imagine.

The whole stanza in summary is really that the woman’s mother is listening to music. More specifically jazz. How I’ve proved my point of Dove using shifts implies on stanza 2 to stanza 4. By reading this poem and other group members shows that people will not get what they want as the universal truth of human beings. I feel that a legion of people can relate to this poem due to problems that involve their family, money, or anything else that’s bothering them. Honestly, who cares? Obviously
I’d like more money, shoes, and clothes and whatnot, but there are homeless people living outside on the streets with nothing but some clothes, a box, and a blanket.
There are homeless people begging for money and/or food. The human beings outside are busy trying not to be homeless and trying their best finding a job, while others complain and whine on what rich people have that they don’t. People should look away from their greed and realize there are others that don’t have what they have when being compared to
