Now, pour half of the water out.
The glass is now ‘half empty’. In both instances, the glass ended with the same amount of water, so why were they not labeled identically? A personality is structured depending upon what has happened thus far and will continue developing. The Hubermanns in Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, are kind and selfless. During World War II, Jews were discriminated against and thought of as less than human. Nevertheless, the Hubermanns secretly shelter Max Vandenburg, a Jewish boy, despite the possible consequences. Revealed is the ability for humans to come together during a time of need, to work together and become one. Here is the ability to rise up and look through a humane perspective to be kind and compassionate. The audience of Lord of the Flies is met with just the opposite outcome. Boys, stranded on an island absent of adults, are in dire straights. They too start by working together. However, power and natural savage tendencies get the better of them soon enough. What is left is violence and hatred, intimidation and dominance. William Goulding exemplifies what it means to be human. The boys are seen to be adept at working collectively, but also being able to cause a crisis within itself. The spectrum of capability is wide, as seen converged and within stories.
