In her essay, “In Praise of Chain Stores”, Virginia Postrel hails the progressiveness of chain stores and counters arguments made against them. As a frequent shopper in my city, I have experienced the benefits of chain stores and how they affect the locals that shop in them. I believe that chain stores have not turned Augusta into a boring city because they are familiar even to those new to the area, they have a high standard of quality and service, and provide fair fixed prices. First, Postrel quotes Thomas Friedman in her essay, stating that “…America is mind numbingly monotonous- the most boring country to tour; because ‘everywhere looks like everwhere else…’ the familiarity of a Walmart to someone new to Augusta may be a relief,
Publix is a grocery store that I am familiar with in Huntsville. Publix stands out from its competitors like Kroger, Piggy Wiggly, Wal-Mart, and Whole Food Market for many reasons. For starters, Publix has a unique rewards program. For example, the Publix baby club and Publix Paw are free to join and include monthly savings and expert tips on baby and pet items. Publix also has two for one coupon which in contrast most of their competitors do not have available.
I would put Costco, Sam’s club and Amazon in formalization stage, collectivity stage and elaboration stage respectively. Since the Costco success because of its discipline, but it has been slow to expand into new areas. Sam’s club focused on digital, more specific, in mobile app, but it hired only decision scientists for the membership team, which means it needs for delegation with control. I Would classify Sam’s strategy as focused differentiation, because Sam made a major investment in digital and it cuts private brand down to one in order to push its suppliers to innovate which is different with others. Although the strategy has indeed increased the sales of Sam’s club and make it convenient, but it is not enough to beat amazon and Costco,

Resource Allocation/restructuring needs Dunkin' Donuts has focused on becoming a cost leader in the U.S. coffee and snack shop industry which is defined as "offering the same or better quality product or service at a price that is less than what any of the competition is able to do. " There are three main ways that Dunkin' Donuts is able to charge lower prices for their products compared to their competitors. The first is that they produce more which results in a higher asset turnover. Also by producing more, they are able to spread out their fixed costs over a larger number of units. In addition, Dunkin' Donuts offers a variety of of standardized products which limits the amount of product and service customization they have to do.
