An organization’s social climate can have a great influence over the general atmosphere of the work environment. In this paper, I will talk about the type of social climate we have in my organization and how it affects motivation and team commitment. I will then go over several ways we can improve communication to include concepts and principles that will support this finding. Lastly, I will examine the type of communication skills I would like to learn to create a supportive communication climate.
Supportive Communication Climate There are two types of communication climate, supportive and defensive, and I am happy to report that our organization possess a supportive climate. Early on I notice the positive atmosphere in the office. My team members were not afraid to speak up when needed. Their opinions and feedback were valued by our supervisors and fellow co-workers; “you matter” concept was regularly exercised (Universal Class, 2018). For instance, our supervisor ensured that everyone in the room was given an opportunity to provide feedback/suggestions prior to adjourning each meeting. Hackman & Oldham’s job characteristic of skill variety and task significance is quite noticeable here in my organization (The Job Characteristics Model, 2015). Because our employees feel valued and respected, they are able to utilize their skills to it’s full potential. Team members have opportunities to move to other projects that best meets their abilities and in turn become more reliable and productive.
