This book shows the conflict between good and evil, and in order to defeat the evil you have to overcome the many struggles in the journey. The two main Demi-Gods of the series, Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, become separated from the others in the group and fall into the deep treacherous Tartarus, which is an abyss beneath Hades, the lord of the underworld. Knowing they are in the physical body of the antagonist’s, or Gaea’s husband, the two begin their bizarre journey through the terrifying landscape towards their destination, the Doors of Death, which will get them out of Tartarus to help their friends in the adventure. While Percy and Annabeth go through Tartarus, the other five demigods along with two friends try to get to Greece, but along the way they face numerous enemies who are trying to keep them from reaching the Doors of Death and reuniting all seven of the Demigods to kill the Titan, Gaea. Have you ever wondered how it would feel to be the son/daughter of a Greek god? Well that’s exactly what happened to Percy Jackson, an average 12 year old boy with ADHD. Percy Jackson and his mom Sallie Jackson had quite a hard life where they lived in Manhattan, New York City, New York. Percy had been moving from school to school due to expulsion and his severe dyslexia which of course kept him from reading properly. During a school trip to a Greek museum, Percy finds himself being taken away by a teacher named Mrs. Dodds to be punished but he gets a not so pleasant surprise but another teacher comes and gives him a pen which can turn into a sword.
Percy has learned his role throughout the story as he journeys to bring back what was taken from his uncle (Zeus) to keep peace in the world. I found the book Percy Jackson The Lightening Thief in middle school during our book fair. The cover intrigued me into buying it and see what it was about because I had no clue. I remember getting excited that it was about Greek mythology because I never knew that it existed, and I wanted to know more about it. The way James Patterson, the author, started it had me hooked. The first chapter Percy was just minding his business on a school field trip and then all the sudden his teacher transforms into a demon like creature and tries to hurt him and asks him where the lightening bolt of Zeus was.
Throughout “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan, the main character Percy Jackson grows in many ways. Through application of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Cycle, Percy’s development as a leader over the course of “The Lightning Thief” can be analyzed (Campbell). Percy is born into the hero’s cycle at his natural birth and his call to adventure is the attack by Mrs. Dodds. Percy crosses the threshold, when he leaves Montauk with his mother and Grover and the first trial testing his leadership is on the bus with the furies. Trials exemplifying Percy’s growth include: the furies, Medusa, the Saint Louis Arch, the “Waterland” Waterpark, the Lotus Hotel, Crusty’s Waterbed Palace, and Hades and the Underworld.
He learns that his dad was Poseidon and why he always loved the water and meets new friends like Annabeth who are vital to forming his character. He is given a quest by the oracle which foresees his future and that he will find and return the Lightning Bolt but will also be unable to save what matters the most. Once he embarks on his quest with the help of his best friend Grover, and Annabeth, the differences between book and movie become extremely apparent, they are very different. One major difference was Annabeth and Percy’s relationship with each other, in the book considering they were 12 they had a completely platonic relationship and were just friends, but in the movie they formed a romantic relationship with each other after encountering hardship together. Another change is the roles of the gods, in the book Ares opposes Percy and is a major plot point in which the friendship of the characters is developed but is almost completely written out in the movie, having no relevance to the story.
At what point does the price of secrecy become too high to pay? In most cases, secrets destroy relationships and lives. However, a kept secret can be to the benefit of others in certain situations. In Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, Victor believes he is doing exactly that for his family when he keeps the monster a secret. In addition to that, Victor is also trying to protect himself from the opinions of everyone around him.
In this installment of the Percy Jackson series, it starts off similarly to the previous books. Percy as always is going to high school, but this time he has a friend named Tyson. His life is rather normal until problems started rising. At this time Percy has been having weird dreams about his friend Grover, who was also with him in the previous books. Percy doesn’t understand the dreams in the slightest and has a bad feeling.
