The main character,Suzy, in “Suzy and Leah”, by Jane Yolen, is a young girl in the United States who is partnered with a refugee of the Holocaust. At first Suzy and the girl have negative feeling toward each other, but eventually they come to understand each other and develop a friendship. Suzy eventually learns what Leah had gone through and now knows how to be a better friend to her. In "Suzy and Leah" Suzy changes her perspective on Leah throughout the story. At the beginning of the story, Suzy has a hard time understanding why Leah does certain things or acts certain ways. She took candy over to the building in which the refugees were being held. She wrote in her diary that the kids swarmed over to the fence grabbing the candy bars as if they were in a zoo. Suzy also about the girl who was standing to the side during this staring at her. In this part she gets to work with Leah and gets to know her a little better, but still does not fully understand her. When Suzy found out what Leah’s full name was, she laughed a little. Leah did not laugh at this time and because of it, Suzy calls her a grouch in her diary. In this same diary entry, Suzy writes “It’s like she’s not any fun at all.” A few days later Suzy writes about her worries about Leah and food. When they had her over for dinner, Leah always took her food back to the shelter . Suzy wonders what she does with it and if she eats it or not.
