Have you ever had a misunderstanding with one of your family members about something? Like if your sibling had a stuffed animal and you take it with you to wash it but they get mad because it meant something special to them? But you just thought it was a stuffed animal, well that's how Stacy felt when her grandmother took away her ballet shoes with ribbon. When grandmother took the shoes away those shoes meant something different to grandmother then Stacy. Laurence yep uses the ribbon symbolize the different understandings between the two. In the beginning of the story, grandmother and stacey didn't get along so well. They were constantly fighting and arguing and at one point stacey thought her grandmother didn't like her because she didn't look more asian like her brother was. Stacey said “Ian and I both have brown eyes but his hair is black while mine is brown like dads… In fact everything about Ian looks more chinese “ (Laurence yep pg.2). This makes stacey feel loved from her grandmother, However both of their attitudes change towards each other. When stacey is reading The Little Mermaid to her brother teri grandmother walks in to hear the story. When stacey gets to the end of how the little mermaid turns foam Ian insist that the ending is stupid but grandmother thinks otherwise, “Maybe she wanted to see new places and people by going on land… If she kept her tail the land people would have made fun of her though she was odd.” (Laurence Yep pg. 4) grandmother says looking at her own fee. Stacey then realizes that it's a perfect time talk to grandmother about her shoes. When stacey takes her ballet shoe out to show her grandmother stacey say “ My satin ribbons aren't like your old silk ones… I use them to tie my toe shoe when I dance” (laurence yep pg 4).
