The story is as significant today as it was when it was written in 1960 because no matter what era we live in; to kill an innocent person is an outrage when the only thing they are guilty of is trying to live their lives peacefully. The Mockingbird is used as a symbolism for accusing an innocent person of a crime and is brought to the attention of the reader when the father tells the children about being responsible with guns.
