The Dragon - The Hobbit Dragons in the hobbit can be found both literally and figuratively.Depending on your perspective you may interpret Smaug, Thorin, or any one of the other dwarves as the dragon. However, I think each one of these characters contains an inner dragon, some more than others. Greed is a common trait that dragons can symbolize and it is present in many of our characters. For example, Smaug is a very selfish creature whose only purpose is to guard the stolen mound of treasure from thieves; even though he truly has no use for it. In addition Thorin and company are often consumed by the power of greed, much like Darth Vader was by the force. At the beginning of the novel the dwarves claim to be going on this quest to restore their history and make sure that their ancestors did not die in vain. Such as Smaug, who is blinded by rage when Bilbo steals a portion of his treasure. This causes him to seek revenge on anyone he can blame, so he burns down the village of the lake men. Similarly, Thorin acts in an impulsive manner when Bilbo admits he has given away the Arkenstone to Bard.
