A crucial symbol in The Giver is Jonas’ eyes because they symbolize a difference. For instance, when Lily points out that Jonas has pale eyes that are very atypical, Jonas thinks to himself, “Almost every citizen in the community had dark eyes… there were a few exceptions: Jonas himself, and a female Five who he had noticed had lighter eyes,” (18). In The Giver, only a few people with these pale eyes have a special difference. These pale eyes show that Jonas has a connection with Gabriel different from other people, including sharing memories and being genetically engineered incorrectly. For instance, Ember is not prospering causing the community to be very melancholy; Doon is very aware of this as he explains to the mayor, “The Blackouts! He jumped from his seat. The lights go out all the time now! And the shortages, there’s shortages of everything” (13). Ember undergoes a constant series of blackouts. The community is very lackluster because they believe that the lights may flicker off, and never flicker to life again. The City of Ember is the opposite of prospering, it’s being overruled by Darkness. The society is in disbelief of any future because of the lack of resources. The majority of the resources have been used, leaving the community with very few items and choices. The community couldn’t pick from many choices of what to eat or what to wear, with very few items to choose from. So, most of the people in the city realized that the city is slowly deteriorating. This society is a dystopian because the darkness in Ember is unfixable. People either have to wait to run out of resources or find a new community; these two situations are detrimental for the community. Perhaps, the demise of the city is an absolute result of the mayor’s greed and selfishness. It appears the mayor is more fearful than compassionate. The idea of finding a new community is nearly impossible because nobody has portable light. The future of the city is shattered, leaving the people with nothing to do except run out of
