How do our relationships with others define who we are? This essay discusses symbolism in stories and poems, and how we relate to them. This essay explains the symbols in three stories: “What, of this Goldfish would you wish,” “The Lottery,” and “Without Title.” This essay also discusses how we relate to them and the characters in the story. Many times we read stories or poems and we realize that we can relate to a specific character, or just the message the story or poem is trying to give. “What of this Goldfish, would you wish?” The theme of this story is happiness and company. In the poem, “Without Title,” the narrator explains that no matter what her father did, he was never felt appreciated. We sometimes take things others do for us for granted. We take those things for granted until we realize we don’t have them anymore. Sometimes we do things that we think our great and that make us proud of ourselves, but sometimes who we wish would appreciate them doesn’t. In the story, the father did things that to him were great, but to the mother they were insignificant. Sometimes, I try doing things at home, and I feel like I did a great job, but never get thanked for them or they are never appreciated.
