A concussion is a traumatic head injury. You usually get a concussion when you receive a blow to the head. You can receive a concussion in any sport, but the most popular sport to receive one in is in football because off all of the tackling that they do. According to MayoClinic.org, you can wear different protective gear during sports, buckle your seatbelt, make your home safer, and exercise regularly. Wearing different protective gear during different sports and definitely make your head safer (Mayo Clinic). Also, maybe not doing certain things during sports like in soccer, you do not need to use your head to hit the ball. In football there could possibly be more padding in a helmet for the players (Mayo clinic). Then for wearing a seatbelt can also prevent a head injury during an accident but it can also save your life too (Mayo Clinic). Just picking up things around your house can also prevent injuries (Mayo Clinic). If you leave things on the ground you could possibly trip over the things and hit your head. The brain hits many different sides of the skull until it stops moving. The reason the brain is still moving is because, when you’re hit by something quickly in one direction and you were going a different way your brain is still moving in the direction that you were still going in (scientificamerica). In Scientific American's article it states, “These forces also cause the brain to move in a swirling fashion and contact the inner prominence of the skull, particularly the petrous and orbital ridges and the wings of the sphenoid.” Another thing concussions cause is coup and contrecoup injuries (scientificamerica). Coup injuries are injuries that happens at the sight of the impact, and contrecoup injuries are on the opposite side of where the impact happened (scientificamerica). Then there are also primary injuries and secondary injuries. Primary injuries are the injuries that happen right away (scientificamaerica). Then the secondary injuries are the injuries that could come later in life (scientificamerica). Physicians pay close attention to the secondary injuries because of the tissue damage (scientificamerica). Because secondary tissue effects are the beginning of long term effects like psychosocial changes, behavioral changes, emotional changes, bodily damage, brain damage, etc…
