A sane person would know that the heartbeat was that of their own and would know that you can't hear a dead man's heartbeat. The narrator also said that “The sound would be heard by a neighbor”.
Nonetheless, he also had high blood pressure. My grandmother on the other hand, from father’s side of the family, was broken, sad to say, and her death wasn’t as hard for us because she was suffering a lot.
