In the text, he said, “But anything was better than this agony!” What he means was that the beating of Xavier’s heart had gotten to his head and he reached the point that he could not handle the noise. Thus, showing that he is insane because he hears something that is not there. Additionally, Edward said that he heard Xavier’s heartbeat after he killed him. As stated in Edward’s confession, “I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! Here here! --It is the beating of his hideous heart!” Sane people cannot hear someone’s heartbeat after one’s death. This piece of evidence proves that he is insane since he had already killed the old man, yet, he claims to hear the old man’s heart. To finish off, all these pieces of evidence show that Edward Anderson is mentally ill. The action that should be taken is to place Edward Anderson in a mental hospital.
