Then it teaches you about the writing of the Mayflower compact and the building of Plymouth colony, letting you know about how hard it was to survive the first winter and how they had trouble with getting people to work when they all shared their resources. Finally it teaches you about the first Thanksgiving and how the Indians and the pilgrims chose to live in peace together and help each other. During the course of this past week and a half, I have been wearing the letter I chose to represent me. My results I received were very weak and almost unresponsive. But didn’t I wear it all day for a week? Yes, people tend to mind their own business while walking in-between classes.
It shows us what life was like living in a Puritan town, and it’s from the view of an outsider. The Puritans are portrayed very well in this story, and it specifically focuses on their lifestyle, which is described as being rather plain and even drab. They worked hard, though, and always kept their faith. People tend to think of Puritans as dull and stern, which has some truth to it. They weren’t the type of people to throw a bunch of parties and drink all night.
The Scarlet letter is a book written in the time period of the mid 17th century in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During this time, the puritans were a very strict and religious group of people who were oblivious to their hypocrisy. Notably, whenever someone had committed a sin, they publicly shamed the sinner as punishment such as putting Hester on the Scaffold with her child in the middle of town and questioning her about the baby in her arms. Committing a sin is the equivalent of interaction with or being possessed by the Devil. Due to the Puritan religion and the time period the people were in, they treated Hester and Pearl as a follower of the devil and the child of Satan.

Hawthorne revolves the theme around the four main characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth., and Pearl. Hester Prynne is forced to wear the scarlet letter ‘A’ after committing adultery against her husband Roger Chillingworth, with the minister Arthur Dimmesdale. As a result an odd child is born.

Hester is portrayed as a sheltered soul, shunned from society due to her adulterous acts. The red A and her daughter, Pearl, are symbols of Hester’s shame which she bares proudly despite society's harsh judgements. Hester Prynne is a very strong women that seems to make the best out of the worst things. This is shown when Hester takes the letter that is forced upon her and makes it into a beautiful embroidered design. This came across to the town folk that she was mocking them as the letter was meant to be a punishment, but as she and her “babe” took the pillar in front of them she realized that the letter will always label her as an outcast.
