It’s enough said growing up knowing who you are, but that luxury isn’t always common. Pearl, the daughter of a sinner grows up hearing what people think she is right from the time she was born. Hester her mother, doesn’t make it easier because the words they speak is true. Her mom should give her away because, she’ll be reminded of her sin, Pearl will grow up differently, and also Pearl won’t truly be Puritan. Hawthorne uses many forms of rhetoric to portray his characters, but relies heavily on pathos in the instance of Hester Prynne. She’s a member of an inherently misogynistic society, and because she’s a woman, her every act is scrutinized. As punishment for her act of adultery, Hester is ordered to adorn her chest with a permanent scarlet letter. Although the audience is well aware of the atrocity of the sin she’s committed, Hawthorne’s writing sparks a feeling of empathy within the reader. Throughout the novel, the reader is exposed to several clear uses of pathos.

Hester is a young, tall woman with dark hair, and according to the book she is very beautiful. The second character is Pearl, she was a baby in the beginning.
Symbolism Within The Scarlet Letter Hawthorne created symbolism throughout The Scarlet Letter in order to develop the theme throughout Hester’s life. Hester is portrayed as a sheltered soul, shunned from society due to her adulterous acts. The red A and her daughter, Pearl, are symbols of Hester’s shame which she bares proudly despite society's harsh judgements. Hawthorne is able to use symbolism to develop themes, characters, and analogies in the Scarlet Letter.

Public shame has been seen as an indirect form of torture for many years, but is it really the worst consequence for a person? People who are publicly shamed carry around the scarlet letter of guilt on them because everyone knows them as "the person who did..." and not who they really are as a person. Everyone focuses on the negative side of the story; The guilt, pain, and suffering of being known as "the girl with the scarlet letter", or "the girl who had an affair with the president of the United States", or "the girl who wrote a controversial tweet". The Prison Door In this Chapter from The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne introduces the setting of the book in Boston. He uses a gloomy and depressed tone in the beginning of the chapter. He is able to convey this tone using imagery while describing the citizens, the prison, and the cemetery.
