There has been an official military draft in America since 1917 when the Selective Service System was created. The draft is essentially a lottery that American men, ages of 18-26 and those who work, are selected from. Those who did not register for the draft could’ve been prosecuted and convicted. There has been drafts for the every since the American Civil War however, drafting was put to an end in 1973 by President Nixon. Whether or not this idea was good one can be up for debate. Many people may argue that the draft can maintain an active military, however we have an active, all-volunteer military which is just as good and not as forceful. America should not reinstate the draft and give their citizens the freedom to decide whether or not they want be in the military. …show more content…

It’s fair to force people to risk their lives for something they don’t believe in. People who support the war should “put [their] own precious fluids on the line” and let others aid the country back home(Source C). The argument can be made that if there is a draft that Americans “think more carefully” about ill-conceived wars and, however there was a draft during the Vietnam War and many Americans supported it(Source E). They weren’t careful and protests were done to press for an end to the war. Much of the country supported the war and other didn’t and had nothing to do with fact that there was a draft. People are affected by war no matter if its conscription or voluntary, “every town, every city [is] at risk” when their country goes to war no matter what (Source
