Results of the Civil War
By Selim Kim We all know that the Civil War has come and gone, but what happened after all of those violent fights? The Civil War lasted from April 12,1861 to May 9, 1865. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, the surrender at Appomattox in 1865, what did this all mean? These were some of the results of the Civil War, but there are a million more results to find out. The main point of the Civil War was to fight for a united country, unfair taxes, slavery,etc. When the war ended, it left us wondering if these reasons of the war were actually reached. There were two major results of the war, the end of slavery and the preservation of the Union. President Lincoln believed that slavery threatened the nation’s liberty and thought that by having a civil war, America could live up to the Declaration of Independence, that “all men are created equal.” Thanks to the Emancipation Proclamation and Lincoln’s beliefs of anti- slavery was brought to an end. It was what proclaimed the freedom of slaves in ten states. The Proclamation declared that suitable slaves among the freed could be enrolled into the paid service of the United States forces. Although this did not outlaw slavery, it started a path on the way down to freedom. Following the proclamation, President Abe Lincoln presented the famous Gettysburg Address. This speech was made to honor the brave men who died fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Some people say that this was one of Abe’s best speeches. Two years later, in 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses Grant of the Union, at the courthouse of Appomattox. This declared an end to the hard 4 years of
