This article was about two brothers who originally lived in Syria and then lived the rest of their lives as refugees in America. The story was both a mirror and a window. A mirror since it reflected something within me and gave me a way to connect to the story. It was also a window because it showed me a new perspective on refugees and what it was like to live as one. Francois and Cedric are two brothers who once lived in Aleppo, Syria. As the war in Syria raged on and dropped a bomb near their home, they were forced to flee or face death. They had to leave everything behind, their friends, the neighborhood, the place where they spent their whole lives. I moved multiple times as a child and with these children I could understand the fear of moving and the sadness of leaving their home. As a window, this story gave a new insight into the lives of refugees. They must leave everything behind or risk being killed. Even when they were away from the fighting, the things they needed to survive were becoming scarce. This opened my eyes to the horrors children our age and younger are exposed to as this war continues to rage on, destroying anything in its path. Previously, we read “They’re Made Out of Meat” which was about aliens who found humans, yet due to the humans’ differences they discriminated them saying how they wouldn’t want to interact with meat which degrades the humans as being nothing to them. While there are some extremists in Syria, this doesn’t mean every single one of its people are terrible and are out to kill us. They are human beings who wish to be alive and away from this horrific war. Who are we to deny them a life full of peace and opportunities? We are all equal regardless of our religion, race and
