Program Description HUD-VASH is a joint program between the Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Veteran Affairs (VA) (Homeless Veterans). I was not sure about what to write for my journals, I did not want to write more than just my daily duties. I ended up thinking that writing about my perspectives, goals, objectives about my duties at work and the homeless shelter system. I started working at the Aguila INC Shelter, which is my place of work and internship. I started in November 10, 2015 as a Case Manager and it has been a challenging place for me. I did not have the experience, knowledge and I dare to say the educational background that may make me feel more comfortable to work with Homeless Families.

The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 was a landmark legislation that drastically altered how the U.S. government approached poverty. Passed during Bill Clinton's presidency, the reform aimed to decrease the dependency on state support by promoting self-reliance and employment among the populace. This initiative gave birth to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. However, despite the seemingly positive intentions, the Act arguably created a plethora of issues. In fact, many have criticized the reform for its unrealistic assumptions about the reality of poverty in America.
The TANF, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, did have its initial intended impact. TANK was implemented as a new program under President Clinton to lower the dependency of families on welfare which is one of the sole reasons the government made the decision to switch from Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) to TANF. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priority [CBPP], “The national TANF caseload has declined by over 60 percent over the last 18 years, even as poverty and deep poverty (i.e., income below half the poverty line) have worsened” (2015). TANF received results that the federal government was looking forward to at the time. There are four goals that TANF is required to meet to contribute to the better life for families and children that fall below the poverty line: “(1) provide assistance to needy families so that children may be cared for in their own homes or in the homes of relatives; (2) end the dependence of needy parents on
Reform in the New Deal, led to numerous Social Welfare programs that are still used today. United States social welfare programs are a set of programs designed to meet the everyday needs of American citizens who meet certain eligibility requirements. These programs consist of educational aid, food stamps, pensions for public employees as well as disability insurance. The Social Security Act of 1935 which created the Social Security System and Social Security Administration, is a welfare program that was created as one of the first objectives in Roosevelt's Second New Deal. The SSS is one of the “largest and most important Social Aid Programs here in the United States.”
While regulations exist in the United States society to determine who needs food stamps and when those families need them, the abuse of this federal program still occurs. Assistance to needy families is crucial and normally temporary with the exceptions of those who use the program as a way of life. All 50 states have many different variations of regulations for food stamps. In Oklahoma, the federal program for assistance for food is called SNAP.
Non-licensed relatives also are able to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, if income eligible and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), granted they are a blood relative who is able to prove with documentation proof of their relationship to the child. Although TANF is a federally funded program it each states is able to decide how these funds are used. With the large push for relative placement of children in foster care, there is a large discrepancy in financial and supportive services offered. Currently there are no plans to make changes to the TANF guideline to include the addition of non-relative placements for children in foster care that would enable them to apply for these benefits. Having a supportive child welfare system and economic services system that works together to support relative and fictive kin placements is important and could result in less children in foster
Ending Veteran Homelessness Social Problem In 2009, President Obama and Secretary Shinseki committed to ending homelessness among Veterans with the Policy H.R. 806 (Bill, 2011). In support of that effort, the Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness in 2010 developed by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) established as one of its goals to prevent and end homelessness among Veterans in five years. (Balshem H, Christensen V, Tuepker A, et al, 2011) Recent studies document the fact that large numbers on veterans are among the homeless and that veterans are homeless because they are poor, gained few job skills in the service, or have not been helped by the Veterans Administration.
Introduction The exercise to establish the number of homeless people in the United States is of critical significance. Homelessness poses immense challenges to efforts aimed at controlling infectious diseases and renders the homeless at immense risk of serious mental and physical health effects. This subject is particularly becomes sensitive on considering the significant number of homeless veterans in the US. Especially in the recent past, homelessness has emerged as a costly problem.
During the late 1980’s Ronald Reagan wanted to advocate self-independence and advancement. He believed too that he needed to sign into the law of welfare bill. Regan stated “reform that will lead to lasting emancipation from welfare dependency” (Davies, 1).
