In the article TV and Audio: Hurting or Helping Literacy (2013) the author discusses the importance of managing the use of media. The author asserts that while some media can be helpful and serve a purpose, in excess it can be distractive, thus detrimental, especially for children. To further illustrate his point, the author offers a glimpse into the early life of Dr. Ben Carson, who not only became a renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, but a presidential candidate. However, his beginning was anything, but easy. While some information transpired by media outlets such as television can be educational, today’s media often lacks filter. Therefore, without scrutiny and management, the effects can become detrimental, especially for younger children and adolescents. The author confirms this point in his article and shares the story of Dr. Ben Carson to solidify his point. In the article he discusses the impact Mrs. Carson’s spiritual faith, her faith in her sons’ abilities and how controlling media usage and goal setting propelled them into academic success. As the author affirms, “today’s children’s surroundings are technology based”, which has allowed them to be more technologically advanced then children in times past (Trelease, 2013). Therefore, my goal is to capitalize on these technological advances to enhance my lesson plans and establish a connection with my students. I intend to incorporate various media technologies and utilize them to introduce new concepts and keep my students engrossed. I also intend to utilize the usage of these technologies as incentives. However, all content, whether for academic purpose or incentive purpose will be scrutinized and its usage monitored. It seems that we, as a society are busier now than ever before. In fact, even stay at home parents seems to run out of hours in the day trying to accomplish all of their tasks. Therefore, as he states, “it is understandable how easily the amount of time our children spend watching television can be underestimated” (Trelease, The connection between Tv & school scores, 2011). Furthermore, as many channels are geared toward education its easily justified, which is why this brochure seems like a perfect fit. Because like the article, the brochure does not call for elimination, but management of its usage. Furthermore, parents will be able to relate to Mrs. Carson and realize her solutions provided undeniable results, which all parents desire for their children. The second brochure I chose was “A Dozen Don’t to Remember When Reading Aloud”. Most parents have read to their children at some point the brochure lists things that many overlook. While, reading aloud to children seems like an easy enough task, responsibility must be taken when choosing books, dedicating enough time, etc. This brochure not only discusses this in detail, but again in a format that is relatable with goals that are easily attained. Ultimately, our goal as parents and as teachers is to ensure that our children are not only academically educated, but that our children are appropriately guided and we ensure this
