EFFECTS OF UNREGULATED MEDIA

The censorship of information on the press, in this case, the internet and television has been a subject of contention for quite a while now. The controversy arises on whether the censorship is a necessity on maintaining a particular code of standards. The material that is generated from the debate is enormous however the issue about the internet takes it to the next level. As the press expands, it broadens the ability of an ordinary person to get access to information globally. And with it raises new issues which need advanced techniques in dealing with them on a daily basis. Among the leading challenges include exposure of the underage to pornography, the use of internet and press to perpetuate the art of war

For instance in the case of Milner vs. California in 1973 the court did an examination on the matter and indeed established the standard for obscenity of materials and gave out the following conclusion: that content is legally obscene if it lacks serious artistic, literary, scientific and political value. It's also obscene if the material depicts content which is explicitly sexual, as expressly defined by the law in a way that is offensive. Lastly that an average individual, who is applying to for the contemporary standards of the community, should show that his work, when taken as a whole, appeals to a given majority (Moreno & Whitehall, 2014). But they are issues which involve privacy which still have to be dealt with to ensure that this freedom does not get infringed. Social sites and media sometime may force intruders into people lives in the name of searching for information and expressing oneself and in so doing getting them into big trouble. The media allows the bypassing of people information due to the things posted which remain in these sites indefinitely. Hence such issues must be solved so that people may freely express their thoughts and speech.

Protecting the children

Based on scholars who deal with issues that pertain to young people, they are many problems which arise if media is not regulated especially affecting the younger generation. The influence of media on children is impeachable

If unregulated it may take the active part in the disagreement and be responsible for the war. If regulated it may stay independent and act as part of resolving the conflict. But whichever role the media may decide to take depends on specified factors which include the relationship the press has with two parties involved and the part of its independence (Paavola & Jalonen, 2015). The major conflicts that were recognized by the international community consist of the genocide in Rwanda and the Balkans wars that led to the breakup of Yugoslavia. In both cases, the media played a significant role, and for instance, in Rwanda, it was an actor in creating hatred through inciting the public and a force of virulent nationalism in Yugoslavia case.
