Even though the majority of news outlets claim to be unbiased, their role usually goes down one of two paths. Number one is the media actually taking part in the conflict through biased coverage, which results in them being the cause for increased violence. An example of this was Al Jazeera’s one-sided coverage of Operation Enduring Freedom. Number two is the media stays independent in their coverage, which in turns contributes to the resolution of the conflict. There are external factors that may contribute to the role the media takes in conflicts. The relationship the media outlet has with the participants in the conflict is one factor. The leaders in the country the media comes from and the type of society also is a major factor that influences the role they may play. Freedom of press is imperative so this should be strengthened and promoted especially in areas of conflict. Members of the press should be protected and allowed to be independent. Media outlets that are allowed to be honest, strong and independent in their coverage, may contribute to the resolution of today’s conflicts.
