4. The Vietnam War saw the use of many controversial military tactics used by both the United States and their allies, as well as the Viet Cong and NVA. On the American side, one of the most prevalent and well known missions was Operation Ranch Hand, a decade long herbicidal warfare campaign that is still causing terrible birth defects to this day. The herbicides used in Agent Orange were contaminated with an even worse chemical, known as TCDD, which is a heavy carcinogen and teratogen. In the period that it was used, agricultural lands were sprayed with Agent Orange in an attempt to starve the enemy by destroying the main crop in the region, rice.
The Vietnam War was an effort of both political and man power. The first couple years gained little traction in resolving for peace. Operation ROLLING THUNDER was a great idea and would have worked with the right application and support but political issues made it ineffective. Operation LINEBACKER II was what change the war and drove the Vietcong to peace agreements. I can agree that if LINEBACKER II was implemented in 1965 the war would have ended much sooner.
On August 2nd, 1964, three North Vietnamese Navy Cruisers were “unprovoked”, and fired on the USS Maddox while it was on a “standard patrol” in the Bay of Tonkin.[1] President Lyndon B Johnson proclaimed this event in a speech that provoked the first attack, ordered by him before war was declared on Vietnam. However, that event was most likely a fake created to increase action in North Vietnam.[2] Does the United States Constitution protect the United States from tyranny of the president over the people’s peace like that? When Americans realized that the war costed in losing many lives, they changed their opinions on the war and believed that the war had more negative consequences than bringing honor to South Vietnam. With this being said, Americans turned sharply against the ideas and beliefs of the Vietnam War (Source F). They were ready for the soldiers to come home to their country, and Americans also protested against the decisions of being involved in the war due to the belief in that continuing to fight in it was not worth the risks. Also, the people lost their faith in the government when Kennedy decided to increase the size of the army, the decision was not made public as it broke the agreements made at the 1954 Geneva Agreement (Source C). In addition, the war costed approximately $167 billion (Source E), and the United States had to pay for these debts and losses for the war.
The Vietnam War was a battle between the United States of America and the mid-eastern country of Vietnam. What commenced the Vietnam War was Vietnam had to make a decision on what type of government they wanted to follow. They could choose between being a Communist government, which meant everyone contributed to society and no money was needed, or they could be Democratic, meaning the people of Vietnam would have to work to obtain money in which they could spend it on their personal needs. Vietnam ultimately chose to have a Communist government; however, the United States disapproved of this idea. Therefore, U.S.A. decides to send troops to Vietnam, fighting to get rid of Communism in Vietnam for a better future.
The Domino Theory was a policy that suggested to the Vietnam army that if one nation fell to communist or was already communist that the neighboring countries would also fall to communism. The draft was a major part of the Vietnam war because it was one of the most bloodiest wars of all time. The draft was when men from all around the United States were drafted to the Vietnam war when there weren't many volunteers that wanted to join. This was a major part of the Vietnam war because many men that didn't want to join the war were forced to join and fight. As the Vietnam war was on of the most bloodiest war and it was being shown on T.V. to where individuals at their homes can see what was happening at Vietnam caused many to not want to join
Nixon issued a policy of Vietnamization, which he hoped would decrease the need for American troops in Vietnam. However, this did not limit the war nor end the anti-war sentiment at home. Nixon, hoping to end North Vietnamese supply lines, launched American troops into the neutral Cambodia. This failed, and in the end brought widespread massacres and destabilized the region. As the war escalated, so did protests on college campuses.
Accounts of war always will be documented throughout history, despite the reasoning or significance. War has been brought upon many countries, whether it was country against country or their people against people. In Inside Out & Back Again, we are taken back to Vietnam and are shown many hardships Vietnamese people faced throughout the Vietnam War. Ha, and her family had to leave their country, in order to escape the war between North and South Vietnam. In this journey, the family had to go through suffering as they tried to build themselves back up from the despair the war had brought upon their family.
The United States of America first acquainted with the Indochina area in 1954 after it began supporting France in its effort to reestablish control over its Vietnamese colony of which the United States’ main reason for supporting was to keep the idea of communism from spreading to another country’s government from Communist China. This ideal developed during the early days of the Cold War, and gained momentum because American policymakers “learned from the pre-war era—that appeasement of aggression merely fueled increasingly more strident and unreasonable demands from dictators” and also from the “domino theory”,
North Vietnam was known for its harsh and effective fighting tactics over the course of the war, including guerilla warfare. The events leading to the US involvement that comes to be known as the Vietnam War starts mainly with the Chinese and Soviet inspired group of Viet Minh created by Ho Chi Minh, otherwise known as the League for the Independence of Vietnam to fight the forces of the colonizing Japanese and French around 1941. After four years, Japan drew its forces back to its borders in 1945, leaving French influenced Emperor Bao Dai controlling the small nation. Ho Chi Minh didn’t stop at the Japanese’s retreat and quickly seized the moment to capture Hanoi and declaring Vietnam to be Republic of Vietnam.. In the late 1940’s until the early 1990’s, there was a state of political and military tension after World War ll that caused a global conflict. It was known as the Cold War, fought between powers in the United States and their allies and powers in the Soviet Union; also known as Russia, and its allies. Along with this major history changing event, were many other events such as the Space Race, the Vietnam war, and the Korean War. The Korean War had become known as the “The Forgotten War” due to it being overshadowed by the more immediate memories of Vietnam, Desert Storm and the 15 anniversary commemorations of World War II.

The United States believed that it was their responsibility to contain Communism. They wanted to stop the spread of communism across the world. They saw that Vietnam as the start of the spread of Communism so it contributed as one of the reasons of going to war. The Domino theory was a theory that if one country in a region falls to Communism that the surrounding countries would fall to communism as well. The U.S. also saw the Domino Theory in Vietnam.
