This novel shows the actions made by some nobles, the treatment of peasants, and the peasant revolt against the nobles. In A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens’s portrayal of the cause and effect of the French Revolution is shown throughout the story. To begin with, the actions made by some nobles and the treatment of peasants are factors that cause the French Revolution. First, the nobles think very highly of themselves and they have a rich lifestyle. For example, the Monseigneur needs four men to deliver his chocolate in the morning which is unnecessary. Secondly, the peasants are treated very poorly by the nobles and the nobles do not care what happens to the peasants. For example, the Marquis St. Evremonde runs over and kills a peasant’s son. The Marquis St. Evremonde says “It is extraordinary to me that you people cannot take care of yourselves or your children. One or the other of you is for ever in the way. How do I know what injury you have done my horses?...I would ride over any of you very willingly, and exterminate you from the earth.” (pg.84-85) The Marquis St. Evremonde cares more about his horse than the peasant boy who he kills which shows that the nobles do not care about the peasants and they treat the peasants as if they were nothing. The soldiers were waiting for orders, asking “Help, gentlemen-officers! The chateau is on fire; valuable objects may be saved from the flames by timely aid! Help, help!” (pg.178) However, Dickens explains “The officers looked towards the soldiers who looked at the fire; gave no orders; and answered, with shrugs and biting of lips, it must burn.” (pg.178) The burning of the chateau shows that the peasants want revenge from all the terrible things that the nobles have done to them and their ultimate goal is to kill all the nobles. Also, another example is when the peasants imprison all the nobles and a lot of the nobles in prison were to be killed at the guillotine. Dickens describes “In a black prison of the Conciergerie, the doomed of the day awaited their fate. They were in number as the weeks of the year. Fifty-two were to roll that afternoon...Before their cells were quit of them, new occupants were appointed; before their blood ran into the blood spilled yesterday, the blood that was to mingle with theirs to-morrow was already set apart.” (pg.269) The peasants want to get back at the nobles, so they never hesitate to kill any nobles they
