A single girl was able to resurrect three men with her caring nature. In the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, many themes appear. One of the main themes being resurrection which is depicted through multiple characters. This theme of resurrection was displayed through the characters of Dr. Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton . Doctor Manette is one of the first throughout the novel to show the theme of resurrection. At first, he was a man that was not in the right mindset. Before imprisonment, his life was full of peace and contentment. However, once he was imprisoned his intelligent and brilliant mind dies. He becomes distant and spends all of his time making shoes. He starts to forget his name and only responds with his prison number. Then, one day his daughter, Lucie, walks into his life. Lucie’s gentleness, patience, and love helps bring Manette back to himself. Lucie was trying to get Manette to remember so she “...held him closer round the neck, and rocked him on her breast like a child”(49). This depicts Manette as a child that is getting cradled. He was resurrected every time he came back from prison. This is because Darnay can reach the lowest point in life but still rise above everything. Lucie is also essential to Darnay’s resurrection because she is always by his side. She is what helps Darnay come back from his lowest moments. Darnay had said that “...he had never seen seen a face so tenderly beautiful, as hers when it was confronted with his own on the edge of the grave that was dug for him”(134). Darnay talks about how Lucie’s beauty helped him when he was near death during a trial for treason. Therefore, Darnay was at a low point and reached a high point because of Lucie. His low point signifies his “death” and Lucie was the one who resurrected
