A woman uses writing as a way to heal herself in a society where she was powerless. The novelist, bell hooks, recites the overcoming struggle she faces by living in a white dominant world. hooks desire is to portray to her audience that African American writers deserve the same treatment as white writers. For her, poetry is her escape from her true identity. It is her privileged speech that allows herself to express her emotions. hooks embraces her well being as an underprivileged black poet and shares with the reader her experiences and struggles. She relays her passion by writing stories that reflect her struggles of being “different”. In her novel, the words she uses allows the readers to relate to the emotion of hooks message. hook states that she was “In all my writing classes, I was the only black student”. The image she challenged to her readers was to show her as the minority in her class. She wants the readers to show sympathy for her. For her to do that she uses words that show her empathy. She changes her identity by calling herself a “Third World Women”. This shows how Hook sees herself in this world of hate and racial discrimination. Hook’s also uses the words “Despair”, “Rage”, “Anguish”, “Rebellion”, “Urge”(hooks12). These words provoke negative connotations on black people, which causes the readers feel sympathetic towards them living in a white, superior world. Another form of words the writer uses is for justice. “We are often deceived by the illusion of freedom speech falsely believing that we can say whatever we wish in an atmosphere of openness”, “Death Threats”(hooks16). These phrases show the unfairness that exists within black people that causes the readers to become frustrated with inequality. The frustration coming from the readers is a way for them to step in and become involved with these issues. This relates to hooks emotions that allow more people to relate and understand how big of a deal racial discrimination
