My thoughts on Tammie's situation are sadness, confusion and anger. It's sad that people have to live like this and have hopes and dreams, but can't seem to figure out how to go about accomplishing them. In the beginning when she was walking to work I thought to myself "she must not have any friends or co-workers that can give her a ride", but while she's cleaning the bathroom she says "my friends think I should stay home and raise my children". What friends? How are they helping you? From what I've seen, which is only a small clip of a bigger picture, her kids are grown enough to take care of themselves at home. She mentions that her dad had a hard working job to support 22 children. Today a large family is considered 4+ children. I'm sure the struggle of feeding, clothing and supporting 22 children is real. However, this left Tammie with fewer opportunities in life. I'm sure at some point she was involved in helping raising her siblings or maybe she was raised by siblings. Either way, this results in children raising children. As an adult she may have been a victim of the theory Feminization of Poverty. This is the idea that women represent and excessive percent of the world's poor due to gender biases and fixed gender roles in society. Women in poverty represent children in poverty. Conflict theory also contributes to Tammie's poverty. She said more than once that she wants to achieve a certain goal and be involved in an upward mobility action to have a better quality of life. The upper class places limits such as education, availability, jobs, etc. to prevent this from happening. Lower classes are less likely to stay in school because the need to get jobs to help support their families and themselves. Not finishing school provides less job opportunities. A few characteristics of poverty are having children at a young age and low education level. Tammie's son is a perfect example of how this happens. His goals were to go to college, but he had a child at an early age and dropped out of school to support his
