The music industry has been riddled with rivalry and treachery since the beginning of its existence. Through various decades and genres of music, one thing remains persistent: the bad blood between artists that spoils their artistry into toxic waste. Furthermore, in the feud between the brilliant Taylor Swift and Kanye West, their extraordinary talent has been obscured by demeaning tabloids and berating fans. The feud between the two began in 2009 when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech because he felt the honor was deserved elsewhere. Taylor Swift implored that the success she has amassed these past years is accounted for, taking Kanye’s lyricism as demeaning to the work she put into her craft. Taylor Swift began her career at the very young age of fourteen, oblivious to the toxicity of the music industry and how it will betray her in the future. Her first song became an instant hit, putting her out on the scene in a very short amount of time, and exposing her to hatred and scrutiny before she even began her high school career. In Crossed Sabres it states, “Billboards, headlines, social media, Spotify playlists, and casual conversation all frequently call attention to the name Taylor Swift…Despite the diehard fanbase Swift has gathered, Swift has many haters. This hatred is often fueled by misogyny.” Taylor Swift has been a victim of misogyny since the day she debuted her first hit song. Swift has been painted as a coquette and has never beaten the allegations of being “boy crazy”, with countless scandals pointing at her promiscuity. Taylor has relentlessly defended herself from the vile interpretation of her held by the world to little to no avail, countlessly fighting for her artistry to be appreciated regardless of her past relationships. Taylor’s object to ridicule was exacerbated during her feud with rapper Kanye West. When Kanye West dropped his controversial song “Famous”, the entire world praised Kanye West and accompanied him with the role in Taylor Swift’s fame. Taylor Swift completely disagreed with the lyricism in West’s song and attributed his cruel words to the apparent misogyny in the music industry. Swift later goes on in her Grammy Awards acceptance speech claiming, “Women in this industry will always be undermined of their success but if you stay focused on your end goal, someday you will get there, and it will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
